On a European scale, Lille and its region rank first in terms of its population.s
potential purchasing power with €1,524 billion within a 300-kilometre radius,
ahead of other European major metropolitan areas such as Köln (€1,503 billion),
Brussels, Dortmund and Düsseldorf. London and Paris (€815 billion) rank far
behind (18th and 32nd).
With 78 million people living within a 300-kilometre radius, Lille and its region are
at the heart of the second largest population centre in Europe, just behind Köln
(80 million people) and ahead of Düsseldorf (76 million people).
The findings stem from a precise, certified scientific approach by Experian pH
based on „population. and „purchasing power. data collected from the exhaustive
Esri MB-Research 2010 database.
The study then went on to position Lille and its region in „purchasing power
potential. on a worldwide scale.
Purchasing power potential within 300 kilometres of the five leading metropolitan
areas in Europe (Brussels, Köln, Dortmund, Düsseldorf and Lille) was compared to
that of the 10 leading metropolitan areas in the world, which are all located in Asia
and in the Americas (Delhi, Jakarta, Manila, Mexico City, Mumbai, New York, Sao
Paulo, Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo).
It turns out that, whatever sources are used,
Lille and its region, in terms of
potential purchasing power within a 300-kilometre radius, are at the heart of the
3rd richest consumer centre worldwide, ranking behind Tokyo and New York.
This worldwide ranking was established on the basis of a non-exhaustive
documentary approach using several databases on population including
Geonames, Wikipedia, Demographia World Urban Areas & Population, and
Worldgazetteer 2010, along with GDP figures in „purchasing power parity. per
inhabitant, in billions of euros (sources : CIA, IMF and World Bank 2010).
